If your teen has a drug abuse issue you need to provide a treatment for him or her. There are two types of treatments your teen will have to go depending on his drug abuse history and seriousness, short term drug abuse treatment and long term drug abuse treatment.

When looking for a drug abuse treatment program it is important to take into consideration the drugs that your teen used and how long was he using them, depending on those two factors some treatment programs may work better than others, which is why you need to be careful with your choice of a treatment program.

Another thing you have to remember is that drug abuse treatment will be hard on your teen and as such your teen can only rely on your support to get through this difficult period. So do everything in your power to make this easier on your teen and help him move out of the danger zone.

Majority of teen drug abuse problems are treated with a short term drug abuse program. Such a program usually lasts between 3 and 6 months. And it usually includes one of these two types of treatment programs, residential therapy or medication therapy. Residential therapy drug abuse program usually lasts between 3 to 6 weeks, but in some cases it involves a 12 step program and may last up to three months. This is more than enough time for a teen to detox and deal with his addiction problem. Medication therapy is used in more serious cases where the only way to combat the addiction is with special medications. They are given to your teen in order to suppress the withdrawal symptoms, in some cases this may also be antidepressants.

On the other hand we have long term drug abuse programs that last more than 6 months. Teens that have a long history of drug abuse and relapses usually are sent to this type of drug abuse treatment. For such teens the first choice is always a therapeutic community like residential drug abuse treatment for stay of 6 to 12 months. In these communities your teen will not only learn how to overcome the addiction, but also how to get back to the society and how to overcome future issues and emotional troubles that may lead to drug abuse.

Among long term drug abuse programs also fall methadone maintenance programs. This is a type of treatment reserved for teens that had an opiate addiction problem. In most cases medical treatment is performed and medications are given to cope with the addiction issue. These clinics offer various forms of therapy and counseling.

It may be difficult to find and provide the right type of treatment for your teen, but this is the most important thing and you have to give it all your best if you want your teen to recover. It is necessary that you find the best suited drug abuse treatment program and that you take an active part in your teen’s treatment. Staff
